I've been using duckduckgo for a while but their new "Feature" of an AI assist was the final straw to try startpage.com
Are there any other good ones?

I just added some search engine recommendations to the lists.d repo
For this initial version, there are some interesting contenders:
#DuckDuckGo just to be mentionted as one of the few mid search sites that can be used over @torproject / #Tor and is the #TorBrowser default search.
#Ahmia which is an independently run #SearchEngine that crawls Tor but filters out the nastiest parts.
@monocles / #monoclesSearch because it is a "hybrid aproach" doing #searx + filling the gaps with DuckDuckGo.
@clew, (made by @amin ) which has it's own index but also includes "#bangs" to use external sites. It's focussed on speed and privacy.
#FrogFind (by @ActionRetro ) also got listed because it's not just a #WebProxy for #VintageComputers but also able to search DuckDuckGo...
As always feel free to open up an issue / pull request if you want to see more entries...
This is great news in search engine land.
I feel that this is right time to do it, too. Just when Google is struggling with the quality of its results (and seems to have thrown in the towel to SEO and monetisation) and big players are polluting their results with AI slop.

« For example, an adult said to the child: “Ooh, a small car! Can you move the small car for me?” Children could see three cars — small, medium and large — but were in position to observe that the adult could not see the smallest car. Since the adult could see only the medium and large cars, when she said “small” car, she must be referring to the child’s “medium.” »

Found using the first attempt in Google, searching for:
multilingual children research empathy cars trucks
Although I'll immediately admit that often a lot of tweaking of the search terms is required. And if Google doesn't come up with someting useful, DuckDuckGo may help. But then again, sometimes I have to give up or Google will start asking me if I'm a human (it still seems to prefer them over bots).
Do not underestmate the power of double quotation marks (although they are fuzzy and sometimes being ignored (both DDG and Google).
If you know the country of publication:

may help tremendously.
IMO learning "to google" is a good investment (even if they are increasingly evil).

ChatGPT vs. Google: A Comparative Study of Search Performance and User Experience

All I wanted to know is how old Isaac and Ezra Robinson are, and internet search engines are not very helpful at all (I think 22 and 20, respectively, but who knows?)
If someone isn’t in Wikipedia, it’s very hard to find accurate info about them online anymore
