Good morning, friends. 🤔💡☕

A few days ago, I spent some time trying to figure out how to make a custom emoji—even considered downloading an app for it. But then it occurred to me that a custom emoji wouldn’t be much use if I were the only one who had it, so that escapade ended there. Strange thoughts happen, don’t they?

Once, years ago, during an ice storm, the electricity was out for a week. We had a fireplace but no chainsaw. All the gas-powered ones in stores were sold out, so I came up with what I thought was a clever solution—an electric chainsaw. After all, I had an extension cord. Luckily, my wife put an end to ‘Operation Chainsaw’ before it began. Oh, and in case you're wondering, we didn’t have a generator either.

Remember that nuclear reactor honeypot I made? I lost interest in the cloud chamber display pretty quickly but I just had a better idea!

A slowly scrolling cellular automata (like, real slow, one pixel per minute?) When new data comes in it takes each byte, sets the current CA rule as the byte's value, and processes a bunch of cells. Then goes back to 1 cell per minute, except the rule is now whatever the last byte of data was.

Depending on how this looks in practice I might use my XOR method instead of using the bytes directly.

How would it be if we knew we all had our valued place in the world? If we valued all things and all people equally? If education, privilege and basic needs were not dependent on competition but offered freely at every level. If we could see ourselves not at the pinnacle of evolutionary progress but as the supporting roots, with a responsibility to use our skills, intelligence and experience to serve the whole world?

AI models running on the local phone – is (likely) here at scale

Direct access to Apple’s AI models via both APIs and Shortcuts, which is a game-changer for app developers and something that should have been done in the first place (I have been doing almost exactly what they demoed for over a year now with custom Shortcut actions that invoke Azure services, so I am glad they are finally catching up). But having that (and all the privacy-preserving components of their confidential computing platform) available to app developers is a huge win, and I hope they will also make it easier to use custom models in the future.

WWDC 25 Keynote Thoughts – Tao of Mac

I am really excited about this update. I continue to believe that the current LLM coding assistance is a renaissance to personal tools that are best supported by you. I started lifting in December 2023 and have not yet found a great app that fits my needs that also allows me to treat the data base of information with questions to it.

I think this is my calling to create that app for myself (and maybe others who might want something similar).

Dear #reviewer,

Complaining that I don't cite 2 (or more!) papers that, coincidentally 😉, are authored by you is, 99% of the time, blatant (and stupid) self-promotion. And if one is an #arxiv paper from this year, well, that's just ludicrous.

I wish reviewing systems include some sanity checks / alarm triggers 🚨 that force #PCChairs to double-check this unethical behaviours.

(another pet peeve of mine when it comes to reviews is New Ideas tracks rejecting papers because of insufficient validation. Honestly, I think every #conference should include a #track for real #new #ideas where any type of validation is explicitly #forbidden as argument).

The molecular cohesion of the atoms that make up human dna, is rapidly deteriorating, with in the next 72 hours, humans will begin to disintegrate with full molecular soup occurring within the next 180 hours, there is no known cause, treatment nor prevention, enjoy the melt I suppose.
