What could possibly go wrong:

»“#governments must provide their #citizens with a space that is as neutral as possible, but moderated — to avoid insults and harassment — in which they can discuss political and social issues.”«

Happy to be on the #Fediverse, a space where involvement of corporations or governments is frowned upon, at least by a significant, and vocal part of participants.

Try to imagine an "ErdoganNet", or "OrbanNet" as "a space that is as neutral as possible, but moderated — to avoid insults and harassment — in which they can discuss political and social issues".

Time for a new #Introduction.

Inside me there is a battle between two Nicks.

One lives on LinkedIn. He is a champion of #technology and of people who use it to improve our lives. For #esa he seeks ways for #space and #satellites to transform #European #industries, and he channels the support of their #governments towards them.
📡 🛰️ 🚀 🇪🇺 🇬🇧 📈

One lives on Mastodon. They recognise their privilege and luck in being a tall, white, middle-aged middle-class, educated, able-bodied, startlingly handsome cishet man. They feel the righteous rage of Ned #Ludd, witnessing the destruction as #tech and #capitalism degrade #society and the #environment. And they seek the company of #woke and open people, who lighten the load with kindness and truth, humour, empathy and strength.
🌍 🤗 🇪🇸 🌈 ♻️ 🐈

Which Nick wins?
The one you feed.

"If #governments are concerned about the dominance of privately-owned online platforms, they have a responsibility to run and own their own.

A logical response would be for these entities to run their own instances of software like #Mastodon—or any #Fediverse-compatible, #ActivityPub-based service. This would allow them to own their content, domain, and user verification, ensuring greater control and independence."

@adisonverlice it's not just re: #Governments (tho #Project2025 explicitly endorses unsactioned comms to twart attempts at #FIOA or any #accountability for that matter), but individuals or any organization:

And if #EncroChat got pwned, who's gonna guarantee @signalapp won't if it's actually secure or isn't an #InsideJob like #ANØM.

After all, both #Signal's Organization and key people like @Mer__edith are known to the authorities by more than just their legal name.

  • What's gonna prevent #Trump from doing a "bag&drag" on her or getting his goons to put a gun on,the developers' heads and force them to,#d0x all users and #backdoor everything (if they didn't already got forced to have some "#LafwulInterception" gear in a closet like #Room641A...

After all, Signal can't pull the 5th and refuse to comply!

"The problem is that governments and businesses serve vastly different purposes. If public policymakers start mimicking business founders, they will undermine their own ability to address complex societal challenges.

For startups, the highest priority is rapid iteration, technology-driven disruption, and financial returns for investors. Their success often hinges on solving a narrowly defined problem with a single product, or within a single organization. Governments, by contrast, must tackle complex, interconnected issues like poverty, public health, and national security. Each challenge calls for collaboration across multiple sectors, and careful long-term planning. The idea of securing short-term gains in any of these areas doesn’t even make sense.

Unlike startups, governments are supposed to uphold legal mandates, ensure the provision of essential services, and enforce equal treatment under the law – more important today than ever. Metrics like market share are irrelevant, because the government has no competitors. Rather than trying to “win,” it should focus on expanding opportunities and promoting the diffusion of best practices. It must be long-term minded, while achieving nimble and flexible structures that can adapt."

Project Syndicate · Governments Are Not Startups | by Mariana Mazzucato & Rainer Kattel - Project SyndicateMariana Mazzucato & Rainer Kattel explain why ongoing efforts to run the state like a business are doomed to fail.

Given U.S. #consumption is so important globally (two-thirds bigger than #EU consumption!) the #world 's #governments have now few options to counter #Trump 's #trade #war : #state #subsidies to impacted sectors and #economic or #fiscal stimulus to avoid #recession (both triggering higher public #debt ), counter-tarrifs, and new free-trade agreements with other countries. In most cases it will be a mixture of all and reconfigure #global trade flows and #market mecanisms.
