Spatial co-variation matters when upscaling environmental samples like soil organic carbon stocks. Geostatistics is under-utilized in most regional estimats. Strong spatial autocorrelation preserves uncertainty in upscaled estimates. By not taking this into account, may estimates report uncertainties that are too small.
