My #fairphone5 arrived today. The stock ROM I did try but there was way too many #GApps that I couldn't uninstall for my liking. I have installed @calyxos and have spent the afternoon installing apps and syncing with @nextcloud

Ich konnte eben auf einem #Google #Pixel 3 XL mit #LineageOS 22 (also #Android 15) die #DKB App installieren, einrichten und nutzen. Und das, obwohl das Smartphone ohne #googleplayservices oder entsprechende Ersatzdienste wie #gapps installiert ist. Ich bin sprachlos. Auf #GrapheneOS habe ich für die App immer extra einen user mit #GoogleDienste geklickt, weil ich dachte, dass #BankingApps die #playintegrityapi benötigen.

I have installed #LineageOS and #fdroid to several non tech-savvy friends' mobile phones.

Some of them with #gapps.

I believe that #firefox from #googleplay / #aurora is the least-worst secure, #foss #browser to suggest.

Prove me wrong.

I have found an old Samsung Galaxy s5 while reorganizing my old boxes with technical stuff.

16 gb of storage, 2 gb of ram, 32-bit cpu, Samsung Touch Wiz on Android 6.0.1, everything working but battery is almost dead.
Perfect target for crazy experiments, isn't it?

I've flashed #CRDroid 7 with #Android 11 without #gapps.
The latest update was in February 2024 and this is an official end of life for this device. But still it works and Android 11 on a device which was abandoned officially on Android 6 is stable and smooth.
Not the fastest of course, but works and doesn't freeze every second.
I'd say it is comfortably usable for some tasks.

Why are there no good phones on the market?

• Yes, even #Fairphone has #enshittified itself too much for my taste!

I don't want much:

• #Android (#iOS is cringe and everything else is either a rounding error or dead anyway!)

• #HeadphoneJack (Cuz I use that thing and #USB-#Dongles are shite! #Sony already did #Waterproof #Smartphones WITH 3,5mm Jacks over a decade ago!)

• #DualSIM (And I mean real Dual-SIM, not #eSIM! with TWO real basebands to be able to have data & calling at the same time, cuz I need that! Bonus Points if it's baseband works with #SnoopSnitch... )

• #repairable like a #Fairphone ( #ToolfreeSwappable #Batteries are non-negotiable! Bonus Points if it can run off USB-C power only w/o a battery or allows hot-swapping of batteries w/o interruptions!)

• #affordable ( < €500 ) or at least not absurdly expensive. (If I gonna pay like €1k+ I might just buy an #Iridium Extreme 9575 PTT used or an #IridiumGOexec instead!=

• No #Bloatware (this includes no #GAPPS / #GoogleApps as mandated for #GooglePlay! Just give me #LineageOS or like a clean #AOSP image...)

I use #Android (a #Fairphone 3+) with all the #GAPPS #Bloat & #Govware yeeted and instead @fdroidorg put.on because that works for me way better...

Moving to a combo of a #PinePhonePro and a #Pixel phone with #LineageOS sans #GApps. I @bitwarden, but their options are... rough.

No #Google means the #FirefoxForAndroid extension can't access vaults. The webpage / #PWA is 100% not mobile responsive (in 2024!). Ditto the #Linux app. There's no #Android app in #FDroid despite, iirc, the client being #FOSS?

At least make the website mobile friendly. A non GApps extension/client would go a long, long way, too though.

@pabloscloud even lineageOS tracks you to death when you install #GApps. There are solutions with #microG to support android auto and safetynet. I just don't know out of the box custom ROMs for it.

@kuketzblog Zunächst: Im Grunde nicht so überraschend, trotzdem hoffe ich, dass das Team von #LineageOS da ein paar Punkte angehen würde. Hierzu wäre es gut, wenn dein Beitrag – am besten übersetzt – in die Kanäle von LingeageOS (z.B. das entsprechende Subreddit) getragen wird. Edit: Ah, das ist schon passiert.

Dennoch würde es immer noch von den eigenen Ansprüchen an das eigene Gerät abhängig machen, ob #LineageOS eine Alternative dafür sein kann. Wer z.B. ein altes mit Bloatware vollgestopftes #Samsung-Gerät sein Eigen nennt oder sein Gerät ohne #GApps betreiben will, für den kann das System nach wie vor ein Befreiuungsschlag sein. Denn echte Alternativen zu Lineage gibt es auf vielen Geräten schlicht nicht. Ähnlich viele Geräte unterstützt das ebenfalls auf LOS aufbauende #eOS von @murena, welches eine Reihe von mehr oder weniger schwerwiegenden Problemen hat: https://divestos.org/misc/e.txt

Ich hab hier noch zwei #Nexus 7 (2012) und zwei Moto G5 (+ drittes ohne Akku) rumliegen.

@bourne@social.tchncs.de Das fände ich generell auch einen interessanten Aspekt, #CustomRom ohne #GApps zu betreiben und stattdessen @microg zu nutzen für Push-Notifications zB. oder dass ohne #GApps manche Apps einfach direkt abstürzen
