The Spanish government has announced a 530-million euro plan to protect communities against extreme weather events.
The scheme comes seven months after 233 people died in deadly flash floods in Valencia in October.
“Higher global mean temperatures may sound abstract, but it translates in real life to a higher chance of extreme weather: stronger hurricanes, stronger precipitation, droughts,” said Cornell University climate scientist Natalie Mahowald, who wasn’t part of the calculations but said they made sense. “So higher global mean temperatures translates to more lives lost.”

In the left-hand column, scroll to Rivers and Streams, Dams, or Groundwater. The last option is real-time data. Then zoom in the map on the right to the waterway you're interested in, and click the nearest dot.
It will give you info, and at some locations photos, of water levels at that location.
"You often think of rain on tin roofs as relaxing, but at the moment it is deafening and horrible," Ms Ring said.
"The downpours are torrential and every time it rains, you wonder what is going to happen next.”
Ms Ring said more than 20,000 people were isolated in her local government area alone, with many unable to access medication or supplies.
"This isn't a flood like we have seen in quite some time.”
