Paolo Amoroso<p>In the 1980s I did know Compaq was a major computer manufacturer but didn't realize the extent to which it influenced the PC industry. This article tells the story of the company and its CEO Rod Canion.</p><p><a href="https://every.to/the-crazy-ones/the-man-who-beat-ibm" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">every.to/the-crazy-ones/the-ma</span><span class="invisible">n-who-beat-ibm</span></a></p><p><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/compaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>compaq</span></a></p>
Jason Bratcher@kiwa@bitbang.social I've got a #Dell #Latitude 5500; My younger nephew 'had' a #Dell #Latitude E6530. Pentium 2 for those machines, ouch! I think I had Pentium 3/4 on the #HP #Compaq #NC6000 + #NX7400 .

Starring the Computer<p>A few people have pointed out over the years that I missed some machine in "The Net". Woodoo Prod<p>For a friend, I installed the latest version of Linux Debian (12.8) on a machine that is starting to be old: a Compaq 6005 with an AMD Athlon II. The machine is operational and appears to be fast even on the web. As it is 32-bit and Firefox will stop supporting 32-bit in January 2025. Chromium was a good alternative. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Lubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lubuntu</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/OS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/32bits" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>32bits</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Compaq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Compaq</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Computers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Computers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Firefox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Firefox</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/Chromium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Chromium</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/VintageComputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VintageComputers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/VintageComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VintageComputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/OldComputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OldComputers</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/RetroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RetroComputing</span></a></p>

Kris :arch:<p>TIL: Compaq's floppy drive had a design flaw that caused the motor belt to slip off. It can be fixed by grinding the retention roll to a different shape, so the belt will not slip over the edge but will be centered.
