I just returned from the beach. Here’s what that felt like in 2025.
Dispatch from Dystopia: 2 – Back from a Beach Vacation
Twenty-seven. That’s the number of Palestinians murdered by Israeli “Defense” Forces while trying desperately to get food aid so their families wouldn’t starve. (The Guardian) It’s the last headline I see before sitting down to dinner.
For the third time, I asked my four-year-old daughter to sit down and eat her food. I didn’t have to wait in line or brave sniper fire from scared young people forced into a situation that will haunt their dreams for as long as they live. A simple trip to pick up takeout from a local restaurant, ordered online, of course, takes on a new, bitter resonance in the global web of food injustice.
We’ve just returned from our vacation, a beach trip. The dissonance required to go on vacation and relax in the world is almost unbearable. I felt I had to write. To do something to ease the burden of knowingly participating in a system that has so effectively institutionalized suffering.
