Rora Borealis<p>We found this die and don't know where it's from. Anyone recognize this? It's likely from a board game, but not one of mine. <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/boardgames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>boardgames</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/boardgaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>boardgaming</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/boardgamegeek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>boardgamegeek</span></a></p>
Got to play a few games back on July 4th, but never got around to posting about it. I've forgotten some details, but remember my personal opinions.

We started with Endeavor: Deep Sea. I had been wanting to try this one for a while and really enjoyed it. I expect I'll be picking up a copy eventually.

Next I taught Leviathan Wilds. We played terrible and lost even though we messed up some rules in our favor 🤣. But I think it's a great co-op and look forward to exploring it more.

We finished the night with Rolling Heights. Stacking the layers onto buildings was a fun experience and the meeple rolling was definitely unique. I enjoyed it and would gladly play again.

Ok, the Automatons variant for #Revive, posted on #BoardGameGeek is boss. I can't ever see myself going to the out of the box solo method. It feels so much more natural not having a limit of a combination of card plays and hibernate.

Sure, it has more upkeep but it wasn't horrible and if you've any design from the Automa Factory, you'll find this similar.

I played on the easier difficulty and won by 8 points so I think I will keep that difficulty while I try other tribes. #BoardGames

What is the best name for my new board game about a Mad Max world of racing cars and blowing up your enemies with crazy weapons?

Please boost for reach!

Captain's Chair, solo vs. Sisko bot

Quick concrete recommendation on how to play this game as I close in on 10 solo plays: definitely play with the advanced side of the boards once you're even halfway comfortable with a captain. The advanced side doesn't really add almost any extra complexity but opens up your options. You have to have at least one mission complete to win, realistically. If you don't finish a mission, you can't do any of the track scoring, which is basically necessary. The basic side only has one all or nothing mission. That limits your options and can put you in a bit of a jam depending on how the offer plays out. By having the three options, it relieves any pressure and lets you respond to what is available a little more fluidly.

I'd even recommend it if you're playing like low-level bots or novice players and the like otherwise in a difficulty sense. It's just a better game.

Fun fact: the oldest board game known to man is called "Senet" and it's actually pretty fun to play! I like the fact that there's a board game geek entry for Senet and it says it was published in the year (-3500 B.C.) LOL

Designer: Uncredited

I've been playing this one so much on BoardGameArena.com lately! And it's surprisingly well designed.

Two new videos up! This time on #RiverOfGold

First up, the BURST version. Takes around 3 minutes to watch and gives you a great overview of what this #BoardGame has in store for you.

Second, the full How to Play video. This breaks down setup, actions, samples playthrough and even discuses an unofficial solo mode you can find on #BoardGameGeek

Arcs Blight Reach, solo 3 handed

So anyone who followed me elsewhere knows that I have some big problems with Arcs as a game, but there's still something that is really interesting buried at the core of it that I can't get over. This is like x5 true of the campaign game, which does this intriguing endogenous table versioning via its different fates, varied starting points from last game, and dynamics between them. It's quite an interesting design space and it makes Arcs the "can't quit you" game that I keep poking at despite being repulsed by a lot of other elements about the game that don't fit with my gaming sensibilities or that I genuinely think are bad design and development aspects. I ran a solo 3 hander because I enjoy playing with the texture of the different developing different board situations. While Arcs isn't like great this way, weirdly it doesn't play that badly since the game is so insanely chaotic and tactical that you can't really make long term planning decisions very well even if you knew the other player's cards.

In this game, Partisan, Caretaker, and Founder created a tableau that was quite different than other campaign games I've either played in earnest or soloed---there was no incumbent empire fate that was looking to supercharge the empire, so while the partisan took a little of that role, it led to a board state with few incentives to keep the empire besides some convenience... and Founder immediately wants to bail and gut the empire as best as they can. The game definitely exposed the part of the fates system that a friend has detailed several times; a lot of the tenor, though not the specifics, of the game is set before and between games by the fate choice. This sets it in complete contrast with Wehrle's other design, Oath, which I consider a true masterpiece in this space that does a lot of what this game is doing but a lot better.

Glory to Rome, 3 players

I had never played Glory to Rome before, but I like Innovation so I figured what the hell. There are some subtleties of the card flow that took me the better part of two games to get---the hand/stockpile/pool/vault distinctions are crucial and the way cards flow between them, and which actions flow which direction, are the game. For the two games we played, the stockpile was essentially empty or immediately swept up whenever something entered it, which made for two very constricted games where several the actions were almost useless unless you led with them. It was impossibly hard to fill the stockpile. Broadly, though, I thought the game was pretty brilliant and would definitely play it again. The card powers were suitably strong, but not so game busting as Innovation. The game is also bruising and you have to keep just the right vigilant watch of your opponenet's tableau without needing to memorize every card at all times entering it. That is a tough line of fun to walk in this sort of game.

Like any Chudyk, when you lose in this one you LOSE. Bad. Someone locks the shit out of you. One game we had someone pouring stockpile into their vault and running completely away with it. In the other, someone had a complete lock on the game by having a bigger hand and the x2 clients power and going on a building blitz straight from their hand. It was brutal.

Good games.

Feast for Odin, 2 players

One way to get a sense of how much your mind is sapped by work is to play a casual game after work on Friday. We both scored our most miserable score of all time in Feast, barely covering 2/3 of our home spaces and scoring in the lower double digits in the sort game. Ah well! I did not get much value out of going sheep this game at all, needless to say. Shearing sheep being 3 workers for 3 four square green tiles return is not good value. I forgot that sheep themselves can be upgraded to green, so if I ever do animals in the future, I'll upgrade out in midgame or something. I don't know that animals are really that viable in Feast.
