Navi :therian:<p>You might soon see me write an Arch Linux RFC that introduces a change <a href="https://wiki.debian.org/DebianRepository/UseThirdParty" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Debian did a while ago to stop third-party repo keys potentially being able to verify first-party repo signatures</a>.</p><p>Because that's still a major issue.</p><p>You add the thing for the feature levels? Yep, these keys may now technically be used to verify a bad package from the main Arch repos.</p><p><a href="https://catcatnya.com/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a></p>
Navi :therian:<p>If you have lots of RAM available, but need to save some space on <code>/boot</code> with Arch Linux :arch_linux: when using <code>mkinitcpio</code> (default initramfs setup): Set <code>MODULES_DECOMPRESS</code> in your <code>mkinitcpio.conf</code> to <code>yes</code>. </p><p>The default zstd compression will ensure the initramfs image on /boot to be smaller than if this option were not enabled, but RAM usage may be higher when booting.</p><p><a href="https://catcatnya.com/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> :arch_linux: <a href="https://catcatnya.com/tags/initramfs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>initramfs</span></a> <a href="https://catcatnya.com/tags/mkinitcpio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mkinitcpio</span></a></p>
Adam Honse<p>Kinda want to try this setup on an actual Steam Deck next. SteamOS is nice but I haven't tried running alternative OSes on my Deck besides a very early <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/postmarketOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>postmarketOS</span></a> build. I'd prefer to go with <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> in this case though because of how well gaming is already covered by Arch (AUR, gamescope-session-steam-git, mesa-tkg-git, Steam itself, etc).</p><p>SteamOS being immutable is nice for its intended purpose, but it kinda sucks for a general purpose PC especially for low level development purposes.</p>
Adam Honse<p>Reinstalled <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> on my <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ROGAlly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ROGAlly</span></a> Z1 Extreme, dual booted with Windows 11. KDE is a nice interface but is pretty awful to use with only a touchscreen so I installed <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/phosh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>phosh</span></a> with my custom <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/squeekboard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>squeekboard</span></a> layouts and <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TouchpadEmulator" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TouchpadEmulator</span></a>. This could be the best UI for "desktop mode" on touchscreen gaming handhelds if it handled fullscreen games (especially with UI scaling above 100%) better and supported Variable Refresh Rate. It is so nice for everything besides gaming.</p>

ilyess<p>Just updated a package with yay and watched it pull, patch, and build from source like it’s nothing. Still wild that this is just normal on Arch. NiceMicro<p>There was something interesting going on on one of my systems:</p><p>If a certain function in <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Python</span></a> was called as a separate process with the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/multiprocessing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>multiprocessing</span></a> library, then the sort_values function of <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Pandas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Pandas</span></a> would just hang (and therefore the process would never produce the output I was waiting for). Called from the main process was OK.</p><p>The solution was to change the sorting algorithm by the `kind="stable"` parameter. Weird.</p><p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/parallelization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>parallelization</span></a></p>
House Panther :verified_paw:<p>So I had my first ever breakage of <a href="https://goblackcat.social/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a>. I couldn’t figure out why when I issued the command pacman -Syu, it couldn’t find any updates. That just doesn’t happen in rolling release distribution. I checked the pacman database for corruption and it was seemingly fine because I could query it. Nevertheless the Arch wiki to the rescue. I rebuilt the database from the log file. But then a weirdness happened. The database reported that I had a newer version of the packages than the ones on the servers. No way. </p><p>I thought my 3 year old install was completely hosed at this point. It turns out that that was a simple fix. I just needed to install a package called reflector to fix my package mirror list. Phew! A complete reinstall would not have been much fun. Thankfully Linux is not like Windows where reinstalling is often not the answer.</p>
