This Is My GlasgowThis rather beautiful B-listed Art Deco cinema with Italianate flourishes in Hamilton to the southeast of Glasgow is set to be demolished as it's been classified as unsafe. Designed by James McKissack, it opened as La Scala in 1921 and closed as a cinema around 1960. It has been empty since 1997. It's influencing the look and design of buildings 100 years later! I've attached a photo of the Rietveld Schröder House from 1924, alongside a new apartment block in Parramatta built in the 2020s that I almost moved into. And what's really interesting is that many of the same design ideas are still being used on new buildings nearly 100 years later! Flat rectangular shapes, in white and grey. Minimal ornamentation. Flat roof. I could show a photo of the Rietveld Schröder House to someone who's not familiar with it, tell them it's a new townhouse that was just completed in Western Sydney, and they'd believe me. That's what I mean by it looks 100 years ahead of its time. And it looks radically different to many other buildings that were built in that same timeframe. So if you want to see the original grand-daddy of contemporary housing design, the very first one of this style is in Utrecht.
