KYŌTO'S GRANDEST FESTIVAL
Summer in Kyōto is said to begin with the Gion Matsuri (祇園祭) and end with the Gozan-no-Okuribi.
The festival is one of Japan's most important, lasting for the whole of July. Born out of prayers to end a plague in 869, the Gion Matsuri has been an annual event since 970.

Yesterday I wrote about getting used to cycling in the summer heat. Today, in the vineyards, the temperature peaked at 40 C (104 F), reached 37 C (98 F) in the plain and didn't drop below 30 C (86 F) during 3h30 of my 100 km tour.
It looks like I'm really getting used to it - drinking a lot of water helps - but I'm really looking forward to significantly lower temperatures from tomorrow on.
