SCI NewsIssue#05/2025 - 10 Jul 2025 - SCI News - Cosmos

If you're so minded, you can take a listen to the interview I did with Valerie Sanderson on the BBC World Service about the new interstellar interloper, Comet 3I/ATLAS, & what it means for science & future missions like ESA's Comet Interceptor.

It starts at 13m18s into today's episode of The Newsroom:

Welcome to the neighbourhood, 3I/ATLAS, if only briefly 😬✌️

A new interstellar object has been found skimming through our solar system, only the third after 1I/'Oumumua & 2I/Borisov ☄️

This new object, detected by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, will make its closest approach to the Sun in late October, inside the orbit of Mars, & then barrel out again at more than 200,000 kmh 👀

📸 Nova V462 Lupi Now Visible
A rare celestial event is underway in the southern sky. Nova Lupi 2025 is a thermonuclear explosion on a white dwarf, discovered mid-June and now visible with binoculars. Even more rare: Nova Velorum 2025 is visible too, making two simultaneous novas!

Separated at birth / Gone but not forgotten 🚀

I've just watched the trailer for the film of Andy "The Martian" Weir's book "Project Hail Mary", starring Ryan Gosling & due out next year.

Take a careful look at 01:30 into the trailer, as Gosling's rocket launches.

Yep, that's an Ariane 5 dropping its umbilicals 🤪

If I was being generous here, I could agree that this is the first direct image of this specific exoplanet, TWA-7b 👍

But it’s certainly not the first direct image of an exoplanet or even the first one imaged by JWST 🙄

There’s something about the JWST x exoplanet combo that seems to generate endless misleading clickbait headlines, undermining the genuinely good science being done 🤷‍♂️
