rdm<p>One of my last shots from Friday night. This will be a familiar sight to everyone North of the Equator, but it is a rare visitor around my latitude. In fact, the last time I shot this was in December of 2023. In a bit of an amusing twist, this image, like the one in 2023, was shot with my Dwarf2. This time I got much more than 10 minutes though, and have access to much better post-processing options.</p><p>Andromeda is the closest spiral galaxy to our own, and the source of a lot of what we know about the structure of galaxies like ours. Here we get Andromeda and the companions M32 and M110. </p><p>So, here we have 120x15s@60 exposures, post processed in Stellar Studio and finished in Snapseed. We also have the original version from 2023, 40x15s@80 post processed in Snapseed only. rdm<p>Last night was an interesting one for astrophotography. According to the forecasts, we were to expect about 2 hours of clear skies, and right on schedule, a mass of cloud came in from the North-West. Unexpectedly, it then slid off to the South-West, and vanished. We then spent the rest night nervously picking new targets and waiting for the cloud to return. Which it did at about 4AM. </p><p>So this was one night where having the ability to schedule our shoots was utterly useless to us. </p><p>That said, we are in Bortle 2/3 skies here, and with a new moon we had a chance to go for some things that lose a lot of detail in the suburbs, even with a smart telescope. </p><p>One of those for me was the Tarantula Nebula, aka 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud.</p><p>This is a truly massive star forming region - don't forget that the LMC is a companion galaxy to ours - so it is really far away compared to other similar objects we can discern. As it is, it is 2/3 degree by 1/2 degree in size for us, making it a massive 200-570 parsecs across at the estimated distance of 49 Kpc . </p><p>It is also insanely bright - if it was the same distance as the Orion Nebula, it would be as bright as a full moon!</p><p>Anyways, I got 83 minutes with the Ha/OIII filter on the Dwarf3, post processed in Stellar Studio and Snapseed.</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Astrophotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Astrophotography</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Astrodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Astrodon</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/LMC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LMC</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/TarantulaNebula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TarantulaNebula</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Dwarf3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Dwarf3</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/SmartTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Snapseed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Snapseed</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/NGC2052" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NGC2052</span></a></p>

rdm<p>Last night was the last night of clear weather for a week or so for us, so, despite the full moon, we popped the Dwarves up on the roof.</p><p>First up let's look at what I got the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/DwarfII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DwarfII</span></a> to do. I thought I'd revisit my old favourite, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/C63" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>C63</span></a> the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HelixNebula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HelixNebula</span></a> . In both cases there is about 7 hours of exposure, at gain 80, and both are using a dualband <a href="https://aus.social/tags/OIII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OIII</span></a> / <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HII</span></a> filter. </p><p>Both were post processed in the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/StellarStudio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StellarStudio</span></a> and finished in <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Snapseed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Snapseed</span></a> . </p><p>I am utterly amazed at just how good the Dwarf2 stands up. rdm<p>A couple of nights ago I let my <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Dwarf3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Dwarf3</span></a> stay out all night with a stellation mask, which bagged me about 8 hours worth of <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Antares" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Antares</span></a> , <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Messier4" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Messier4</span></a> , and other goodies, including the Antares <a href="https://aus.social/tags/ReflectionNebula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReflectionNebula</span></a>. </p><p>I ran it through the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/DwarfLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DwarfLab</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/StellarStudio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StellarStudio</span></a> tools, and then did a bit more cleanup in <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Snapseed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Snapseed</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/GooglePhotos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GooglePhotos</span></a> - about 15 minutes work.</p><p>I'm pretty darned pleased with the results. </p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/astrophotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>astrophotography</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Astrodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Astrodon</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/SmartTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartTelescope</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Nebula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nebula</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Star" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Star</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/GlobularStarCluster" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GlobularStarCluster</span></a></p>
rdm<p>I have a question for the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Astrophotographer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Astrophotographer</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Mathematician" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mathematician</span></a> folks out there.</p><p>What is the smallest number of frames you could perform a drizzle transform on? </p><p>Could you, for example, perform it on two frames, and then submit that image to a livestacking process?</p><p>Does this idea even make sense?</p><p>As for "Why do this?", I am looking at the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/SmartTelescope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SmartTelescope</span></a> world, and wondering if you could perform the resolution increase in conjunction with live stacking, without resorting to post-processing. This is to attempt to allow a software-only capability upgrade, while still maintaining the convenience.</p><p>I figured I'd ask here first, because (conceptually) it seems almost too simple.<br> <br><a href="https://aus.social/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Astrodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Astrodon</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/DumbQuestion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DumbQuestion</span></a></p>
