AP News · Japan launches a climate change monitoring satellite on mainstay H2A rocket's last flightJapan has launched a satellite to monitor greenhouse gas emissions using its H-2A rocket. It marks the rocket's final flight before being replaced by the H3, a more cost-competitive model. The rocket lifted off Sunday from the Tanegashima Space Center carrying the GOSAT-GW satellite. It will track carbon, methane, and other greenhouse gases as part of Japan's climate change monitoring efforts. The launch had been delayed for several days due to electrical issues. Since its debut in 2001, the H-2A has completed 50 missions with near-perfect success.

A critical US atmospheric data collection program will be halted by Monday, giving weather forecasters just days to prepare. Scientists that the Guardian spoke with say the change could set hurricane forecasting back “decades”, just as this year’s season ramps up.

AP News · Brazil strikes deal with Musk's Starlink to curb criminal use in the Amazon rainforestBrazil’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office has signed a landmark agreement with Elon Musk’s Starlink to limit the use of its satellite internet service in illegal mining and other criminal operations in the Amazon. Starlink’s high-speed system has rapidly expanded across the region, and it's also been adopted by criminal groups. The agreement, the first of its kind, comes after years of pressure from Brazilian authorities. The agreement calls for service to be blocked to a terminal if it's confirmed to be used for illegal activity.
