Life can be incredible sometimes. I post frequently on RedNote/Xiaohongshu. Last night I read a poem I'd written in 1971. Great reaction to it including this bit of text from a Chinese poet, Su Shi. It's from 1082 but the sentiment carries through the centuries. I'll read more of his work and profusely thank the follower who commented with this on my post. I call it serendipity. From 'Ode to the Red Cliffs'.

Day five: Multi-cultural bullshit

“Chinese language #influencers who mostly post lifestyle content are interviewing election candidates on the social media app #Rednote, allowing politicians to bypass an apparent “shadow ban” on #campaigning by the app and reach a disengaged but vital audience.

The interviews with influencers who usually post about food, real estate and shopping have been published on a platform that is not actively monitored by the Australian Electoral Commission due to Rednote’s scale and the commission’s resources.

#ScottYung, the #Liberal candidate for the ultra-marginal Sydney seat of #Bennelong, where almost one-third of residents have #Chinese ancestry, has featured in multiple interviews shared by #Mandarin speaking influencers on Rednote in recent weeks.”

I note Scotty (another Scotty) highlighted himself due to State campaigning irregularities in 2019. Johhny (War crimes) Howard is all over the #Bennelong campaign. Howard, one step away from #CCP influence campaign. Handy Andy Hastings will be in fits.

This isn’t a “Chinese thing”, this is a “Politics thing” where a multicultural background is weaponised for candidates against the rest of Australian #voters.

I find it fascinating that birds just come with engineering instructions.

Currently watching sunbirds build a nest at my balcony and I always wonder how they know how to do what they do

Ps: Realise that people thought this were the birds I am talking about lol. No, these are taken from xiaohongshu, and these are magpies.

The sunbirds in my apartment are here hachyderm.io/@liztai/114141713

Misinformation was rife as the wildfires spread across Los Angeles last month, and that wasn’t just happening in English language media. For @thexylom, Aorui Pi explains how platforms like WeChat and RedNote served as a vector for fake news, which may have made life harder for Chinese immigrants living in fire-affected areas.

The RedNote phenomenon is probably one of the most important events in social media history. Tens of millions of Americans and Tens of millions of Chinese have suddenly started chatting. The biggest shock for both groups has been the shattering of illusions about American wealth. In terms of purchasing power Chinese are on average very wealthy, with cheap goods, cheap healthcare etc. Meanwhile, US food costs and medical costs are spiralling. In practical terms, rising food and other costs in the west and GDP growth in Asia is changing the world at an incredible rate. The collapse of US hegemony will bring a new multipolar world. And it is a shock to many to see how ill-prepared the West is for this new future.
