Su_G<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://deppenkessel.de/@GNUmatic" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>GNUmatic</span></a></span> <br>No one observes so accurately as an observer who’s an outsider. As well as the “irrational madness” quote, there’s this: “MAGA is a backlash by white, evangelical forces seeking to return the United States to its pre-1960s civil rights era. Its core supporters are low-income, low-educated whites and evangelical Protestants. Trump has channeled the anxiety of these groups, whose status has been shaken by job losses, deepening polarization, and the surge in immigration due to globalization, and has incited their anger toward the established elite and "outsiders" (people of color, undocumented immigrants, Muslims, etc.).”</p><p>And this, with wider applicability: “Declining industries are destined to be passed on to developing countries over time. Even in our case, reviving a declining industry is difficult. The situation is even more dire in the United States, where production costs are at least 30% higher than ours and the industrial ecosystem has collapsed due to over 20 years of manufacturing hollowing out. Trump is dreaming of using his imperial power to mobilize allies to reverse this trend. To make matters worse, if the empire treats allied workers, who are willing to help, as if they were vassal slaves, then nothing will work. The United States is now shooting itself in the foot with foolishness.”</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/ReconnectingConsequencesToCauses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReconnectingConsequencesToCauses</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/USPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USPol</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/RepublicOfKorea" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RepublicOfKorea</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Editorial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Editorial</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@DemocracyMattersALot" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>DemocracyMattersALot</span></a></span></p>

One of his summary takes:</p><p>"This urge to make Epstein’s power sophisticated and complex serves a similar purpose as the elites’ insistence on Epstein’s extraordinary genius–both are ways of squaring the evident smallness of the man himself with the vastness of the world he built and the seemingly outsized influence he possessed. Both of them betray a collective lack of imagination when it comes to just how ludicrously rewarded dumbasses can be in this country. Epstein didn’t have to be anything special to become a key player in an evil conspiracy. He had to be rich, and he had to be useful to people richer and more powerful than he was. The very real possibility is that Epstein was both a rich dumbass and a key player in an evil conspiracy, because evil conspiracies require nothing more."</p><p><a href="https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/10/i-called-everyone-in-jeffrey-epsteins-little-black-book/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">motherjones.com/politics/2020/</span><span class="invisible">10/i-called-everyone-in-jeffrey-epsteins-little-black-book/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Epstein" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Epstein</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/JeffreyEpsteinFiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>JeffreyEpsteinFiles</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Epstein_Files" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Epstein_Files</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/EpsteinFiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EpsteinFiles</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/USPol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USPol</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/ReconnectingConsequencesToCauses" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReconnectingConsequencesToCauses</span></a></p>

This is terrible: in NZ nearly 70% of new COVID cases were reinfections! We must be able to do better than this: Clean &/or filter the air- especially in healthcare, childcare, school situations; get vaccinated; mask up especially inside at mass social gatherings; socialise outside where fresh air is circulating - COVID is airborne!; etc etc - we know what to do, let’s do it!

Concerning: “The number of confirmed Covid cases in Australia looks to have doubled in the last couple of weeks”.

That’s a rapid increase & when you put it together with news from other countries —> time to elevate precautions (clean the air, avoid crowds esp. Indoors, get up-to-date with vax, wear a mask to protect yrself & others who can’t do so like babies…). We all know the drill by now, no excuses!

And thanks for the alert John! 🙂

Wow! A stunning read - thank you so much for formulating & sharing this & all power to your students & yourself. This resonates so loud & clear:

“I think no one really wants to have a whole generation of people who know how to fake it and phone it in and debate me bro but no idea what they're talking about. I truly believe that the students we graduate who actually read and think and write for themselves will stand out like floodlights, and will likely… be the ones who can pursue anything they want. But the gamble they are taking is reading and thinking and then being led by a generation of zombies, and it scares them.”

They will be floodlights as you are. 🙂
