A study found #oceaacidification—the process in which the world’s oceans absorb excess #carbondioxide from the #atmosphere, becoming more acidic—crossed a “planetary boundary” five years ago.
#NOAA determined that #ocean acidification enters this danger zone or crosses this planetary boundary when the amount of calcium carbonate—which allows marine organisms to develop shells—is less than 20% compared to pre-industrial levels. The new report puts the figure at about 17%.

AP News · High Seas Treaty gains momentum as 18 new countries ratifyA wave of new ratifications during the U.N. Ocean Conference in France has brought the High Seas Treaty closer to the 60-country threshold needed for it to enter into force. The treaty would, for the first time, allow nations to create marine protected areas in international waters. Advocates say it’s critical to tackling the biodiversity and climate crises and to achieving global conservation targets. Once ratified by 60 countries, a 120-day countdown begins, followed by a conference where implementation rules will be set and only those who ratify early will have a vote.
