I was awarded a grant by @BerlinUAlliance - this grant will allow me to visit Stefanie Haustein, associate professor at the School of Information Studies at the University of Ottawa and co-director of the ScholCommLab.
During my stay, I will investigate metadata flows in the context of research data. In particular, I will examine the transfer of metadata from local to global contexts.

I have created a static web gallery generator.

The “sophistication” about it right now: the Python script extracts with the help of exiftool metadata from the photos and displays the info automatically on the web site. So far, it extracts the keywords from the photos and creates a tag cloud of them, which you can see on the landing page. If you click on a tag, you see the thumbnails of the photos that contain that keyword/tag as metadata. Click on a thumbnail to see the big photo, under the photo you can see a caption which is also automatically created from the extracted metadata, it’s composed of the name of the city, the name of the state and the capture date (datetimeoriginal).

Of course, my plans are much much bigger: the whole project was inspired by the Wordpress plugin Media Library Assistant and it’s metadata mapping capabilities - but I wanted this as a static web site. Here is an example of a gallery web site that uses Worpress/Media Library Assistant.

For all of this to work properly, of course the first step is to get the right metadata into your pictures, which you can do with Digikam, more precisely its tools GPS correlator and reverse geocoding - the latter creates actual location names from gps coordinates and saves them as metadata inside the photo.

Staatliche und staatsnahe Akteure erklären schon seit einer Weile, einen Kampf gegen Verschwörungstheorien zu führen. Dabei arbeiten diese Akteure nicht nur oftmals mit vereinfachenden bis unklaren Definitionen von Verschwörungstheorien und vermischen Kritik an tatsächlich gefährlichen Verschwörungserzählungen mit einem sehr fragwürdigen Kampf um Deutungshoheiten.

Sie unterschlagen dabei auch, dass es Staaten und Regierungen selbst sind, die Verschwörungserzählungen produzieren oder sich ihrer bedienen. Und dass es auch tatsächliche Verschwörungen gibt, die von Staaten und deren Behörden ausgehen oder an denen sie beteiligt sind.

Wie auch immer es sich genau im Fall von Jeffrey #Epstein, seinem sexuellen Missbrauchs-Netzwerk mit Verbindungen in höchste politische Kreise und mit seinem Tod verhalten haben mag, ist noch immer nicht geklärt. Doch nun beweisen zumindest Metadaten, dass die vom #FBI und US-Justizministerium veröffentlichten, angeblich uneditierten Videos aus Epsteins Zelle manipuliert worden sind, was weitere Spekulationen und Skepsis zu den offiziellen Darstellungen zum Fall begründen dürfte.
