Raijū, a ball of lightning, is often depicted in animal form as the 'pet' of Raijin.
When Raijin sets about making thunder Raijū more often than not escapes and becomes rather uncontrollable. Lightning bolts are Raijin's attempts to scare Raijin from whatever navel he is resting.

Fantastic storm last night, mostly sheet lightning, the whole sky was flashing for a good hour and we got some nice rumbles. 
️ My youngest slept through the whole thing while the rest of us were bleary-eyed staying up until 2am this morning.
I only managed to get one photo of a bolt, my husband promptly commented on how it reminded him of the Crack in Time from Doctor Who!
