Capot, Kaputt, kaput.

The English word Kaput originated with a French card game. Players used “capot” for both big winners and big losers. German speakers adopted it, respelling as kaputt, and used it only for losers. When English borrowed the word from German, they started using kaput for things that were broken, useless, or destroyed.

@ai6yr There are so many things that I’ll never know in this lifetime. However, it’s super satisfying to me that I’ve figured out how to make most of clothes that I wear now.
#LanguageLearning is the other big Brain Explosion part of my life these days. Both pursuits bring me a lot of joy.

🌙 Today begins the Hebrew month of Av (אב)—a time of deep remembrance and resilience.

Though we mourn the destruction of the Temples on the 9th of Av, this month reminds us of our power to transform sorrow into strength.

“Av” means father—a hint that even in grief, we are held and guided.

Hebrew embraces life’s depth. Through learning it, we honor the past and build a hopeful future.

חודש אב טוב — May this Av be a good month 💙

Supplementing CEFR-graded vocabulary lists for language learners by leveraging information on dictionary views, corpus frequency, part-of-speech, and polysemy

A machine-learning method to suggest word candidates for CEFR-graded vocabulary lists.

- We compare 4 machine-learning algorithms: Regression trees, ordinal logistic regression, random forests, & naïve Bayes
- All are better than a random baseline (approx. double the accuracy).
- From these we use random forests (2k trees) to impute the #CEFR level of previously unlabeled words
