"#JamieZawinski has #repeatedly said:

Now hear me out, but What If…? #browser #development was in the hands of some kind of #nonprofit #organization?

In my #humble but #correct #opinion, #Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:

#Building THE #reference #implementation #WebBrowser and
Being a jugular-#snapping #attack #dog on #standards #committees.
There is no 3."
"Perhaps this is the only #viable #resolution."

"#Mozilla, for all its many #failings, has #invented a lot of #amazing #tech, from #Rust to #Servo to the #leading #budget #phone #OS. It shouldn't be trying to #capitalize on this #stuff. Maybe 3encourage it to have semi-independent #spinoffs, such as #Thunderbird, and as #KaiOS ought to be, and as #Rust could have been."
"But #JamieZawinski has the only #clear #vision and #solution we've seen yet. Perhaps he's #right, and #Mozilla #should be a #nonprofit, #working to #fund the one #independent, non-#vendor-driven, #standardscompliant #browserEngine."

Considering that both #XMPP and #Matrix re-invented #decentralized communication while #email was already there, makes #deltachat more interesting.

The fact that DC didn't invent a new protocol for #InstantMessaging and just used the protocol which was already there, and also that how far has it gone, is mind blowing.

At first when I was chatting with @treefit, I already was developing a Matrix client(#chooj) for #KaiOS and it was the only decentralized IM which I was using and investing resources into. I was skeptical but then I thought it would be a good idea to invest into DeltaChat, as well as Matrix. His argument, of course, wasn't good. He was arguing that we need multiple options in the case one of decentralized IMs fail. However this convinced me to give DC a try.

But now, I see that DC has very unique advantages no other messenger has. Their moto is "playing the long term" game. Unlike Matrix which suddenly exploded, DC moves very slowly. As an advantage, DC is much more consistent, hassle free, has less bugs(in my experience) and has better UI/UX than many Matrix clients. But it has got several disadvantages. Matrix has tons more features which DC hasn't got or has added them just recently such as editing messages and reactions. And it is not yet suitable for public groups, like the ones we've got in the Matrix network.

Overall, if you want secure chat with friends or family or other people you trust, DeltaChat is a very good option and the experience is very good. And I haven't seen something like #webxdc in any other IM. However if you want something like #Discord guilds for a community, Matrix is the way to go.

BTW, DC currently lacks funding, thanks to what #Trump did with #OpenTechnologyFund(#OTF). If you can help in anyway, financial or otherwise, it will be extra valuable at this point.

@JessTheUnstill @bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Exactly...

Coincidentially, that's why #Android (and #iOS) doesn't let users have #root access because billions of devices owned by mostly "#TechIlliterates" that hardly get #SecurityUpdates would be an even bigger risk if they didn't boot a locked-down #ROM image, thus only allowing for #malware in user-privilegued userspace!

Cuz having a mobile OS that shoves everything through #Tor and only allows #userspace-Apps in the form modern web technologies would be a big #security and #privacy gain.

  • Not to mention #amd64 is on it's way out and inevitably they gotta have to transition to supporting #arm64 and eventually #RISCv-#64bit at some point.

@bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @JessTheUnstill @tomiahonen That's exactly the problem, cuz #KaiOS nee #FirefoxOS was a good and solid basis not just for #LowEnd-Devices but could've been excellent for a more #secure mobile OS, as it has good potential for #sandboxing and #KISS-principle'd #Apps that are lean and efficient.

But then again when enthusiasts like @fuchsiii and I were shouting "#ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney!" to #Mozilla, they basically refused to sell any #device, and then we get the "#PSvita-Effect":

I like p2p communication with webRTC better and better. not having a server in between which stores messages, but only sending messages (directly or in the form of a queue) when both peers are online. writing a message queue is my next step in my #KaiOS app #webRTC #KaiOS github.com/strukturart/flop

On my way to #Kochi for #PravConf2025 tomorrow! Let's give those people some open protocols 💪🏼

I've been using #XMPP since before Google became evil, and have never had to shift away because I'm able to take it with me wherever I go—whether it's #Pidgin with its fancy multiprotocols back in the day or my #KaiOS #FlipPhone today. Contrast that to the centralised platforms where I've tried to make my home only to find the rug pulled away from under my feet one day. Talk about owning your home! 🏡

So, as announced a while ago, Facebook just deprecated Whatsapp support for KaiOS 2.x

I expected Dec 31st, not Dec 7th, but sure, whatever.

But in typical Facebook-fuck-you fashion, they implemented it in the worst way, too: not only can I no longer send/receive messages (expected), I also can't browse my existing chat histories or contacts anymore. A popup opens telling me this version is deprecated and the only option is to close the app.

Fuck you, Facebook. Fuck you.

Once again reiterating that if anyone knows how to root a Nokia Flip 2720 with KaiOS 2.5.2.2 (which broke previous rooting avenues) to back up the whole disk (so that I may, when I have the time, extract the WhatsApp data), please raise your hand now.

The Definitive Guide to Publishing KaiOS Apps

I love how they set out firm constraints to uphold quality and social expectations in a way that scales to a largely non-technical audience. It makes sense, because if one app starts to fill the disk, it's not clear that it would reflect bad on the app, it reflects bad on the phone and its ecosystem!

BRB, downloading a weekly >100MB update to an iOS app, should be a web app...
