Job hunting is exhausting, especially when you're a *Formal* Linguist, in a world that has decided to exploit Computational Linguists to serve the interests of LLM and GenAI "stuff." (Disclaimer: I have briefly worked developing ontologies for a company... I needed the money).
Formal linguists are the architects that can create *scientifically* sound models of language regardless of implementation. A formal model can be translated into a computational one. But it can also be used for developing language policies for endangered languages (e.g. modelling the grammar and adapt them for school), or understanding what's going on with some expression that we collectively feel may be problematic (especially in formal semantics).
AI is killing Linguistics.
What my friend had to go through in order to get a #job recently pretty much sums up the #jobmarket -
He had to go through three job interviews and wait two weeks to get called back to work a minimum wage job as a cook at a burger restaurant.
You used to be able to get that same job just by walking in, handing the manager a resume and having more teeth than fingers like a year ago.
