Today in Labor History May 31, 1838: Kentish peasants clashed with British troops in the Battle of Bosendon Wood. Sir William Courtenay led the uprising. Courtenay had previously run for public office and spent time in a lunatic asylum. He built up a large local following in the previous four years with his millenarian preaching and demonstrations against the New Poor Law of 1834. On May 29, 1838, he led a march through town, with a loaf of bread on a pole (a local symbol of protest). They continued protesting for the next two days, alarming the town’s wealthy elites. When the authorities tried to arrest Courtenay, he shot and killed a constable. The authorities quickly mustered a small army. Courtenay had a gun and a sword, but his followers had only sticks. Courtenay managed to kill a Lieutenant in the ensuing battle, but was promptly killed by other soldiers, who also killed eight of his followers.

"USAID once provided 65% of Somalia’s foreign aid. Now USAID is being dismantled. And in Somalia, dozens of centers treating the hungry are closing. They have been crucial in a country described as having one of the world’s most fragile health systems as it wrestles with decades of insecurity.

"Save the Children, the largest non-governmental provider of health and nutrition services to children in Somalia, said the lives of 55,000 children will be at risk by June as it closes 121 nutrition centers it can no longer fund."

#UN says 100% of Gaza population are facing #starvation and a great number is suffering from malnutrition, especially #children. Since March, when the Israeli occupation initiated the war again and broke the ceasefire, no food or aid was allowed into the Gaza Strip.

Despite international aid organizations' attempts to pressure #Israel into allowing them to operate normally and deliver #food to everyone, the army continues to target international and aid workers and blocks the aid trucks' entry.

The #Gaza Strip is a coastal enclave that used to depend on farming, animal rearing, and fishing. If the Israeli army stops its constant attacks against these sectors, the people can start working again and feed themselves.
