In the third session of BOGS 2025, we'll have presentations on: isotope analysis of pyrolysates from proteins in paintings, removal of reactive dyes from wastewater and peat core multiproxy investigation of Pleistocene climate. Diverse but linked by the analytical tools being used.

Second session of BOGS 2025 meeting included: GDGT distributions in Oligocene marine sediments, Py-GCMS characterisation of climate smart fertiliser reconstructing Devonian pCO2using biomarkers and isotopes. Consolidating the range of methods and topics being used.
First session of 2025 British Organic Geochemcal Society meeting, hosted by Bristol OGU, just finished. Topics included Py-GCMS & FTIR characterisation of plastic particles, methionine methylation of brGDGTs, food transport through lemur using deuterium label and HRMS for forensic profiling of soils. A fantastic broad range of topics.
CNRS is advertising for an isotope geochemist to work on phytolith and water samples from Africa. 18 months.

Where is over 99% of the world’s gold hidden?
It’s actually deep underground locked away in the Earth’s metallic core. However, researchers at our Uni discovered traces of precious metals in volcanic rocks on the islands of Hawaii which must have come from the Earth’s core: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html?id=7808. Their data shows material from the core, including gold and other precious metals, is leaking into the Earth’s mantle above.

Of course the students download the more capable desktop version for their projects (also, yes, I know there are more advanced portals out there). #geology

Happy birthday to #geochemist Charles David Keeling (1928 - 2005) whose decades long observations of CO2 in air samples from Mauna Loa Observatory were some of the 1st direct data to show the human contribution to greenhouse effect & global warming. The ‘Keeling Curve’ (in copper & red) shows both the seasonal variations (the wiggles) & the strong upward trend with time as the greenhouse gas built up in the atmosphere.
