David Bowie. Fame
David Bowie took on many guises; here he (explicitly) does the James Brown, with a great slice of blue eyed funk. Written with with John Lennon it offers a slightly rockier version of Brown's sound, but is none the worse for that. JB then picked up the central hypnotic riff for his own Hot (I want to be loved) the next year. Bowie's soul years also produced the magnificent Golden Years, of course.

A bit of a muggy night on the island, so it’s a perfect time to spin this.
Ecstatic to have found a copy of this in near mint condition. This record is 60 (!) years old, and has no business being this pristine.
I recently watched one of the newer Nina Simone docs whilst on the road, and then this popped up not too long after.
“Strange Fruit” is such a devastating song.
And the 10+ minute long “Sinnerman” might be the greatest closing track on an album ever. If not, it HAS to be in the conversation.

Wegen untauglicher FOH-Position auf Tablet umgestiegen, auf einer Treppe sitzend. Es stellt sich dann doch heraus, dass 31 Kanäle mischen auf einem Tablet einfach keine so gute Idee ist.

LTD. Groove for a Little While
This nice bit of funky, horn punctuated stuttering funkiness comes from a band more known for dance/disco tracks than funkiness, but on this they are channeling funk brilliantly. Complete with a great funky sax solo, chanted vocals & that funky keyboard sound, its a pity they only found the funk occasionally. Still, when they found that groove they worked it well!
Funkadelic are going to re-release all-analog remaster/repressings of their albums…

Cymande. Brothers on the Slide
Cymande are well known in funk-fan circles with various tracks being often nominated a 'rare groove' classics. Brothers on the Slide is a personal favourite, with its mellow funkiness driven by a percussive shuffle rhythm section, some great horn punctuation & some great start/stop sections. Groovy funk!

A great album for a Sunday evening!
A big heaping slice of killer soul jazz, originally released in 1972, in the U.S. and Japan only, both in quadraphonic presses.
Finding one of those original presses in good shape is VERY difficult, and if you do find one, you’ll spend somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 CAD for it.
Ditto for their second album Mirage as well.
The highlight for me with this record is the bass and drum work. This rhythm section is absolutely on fire here, courtesy of Reggie Willis and Arlington Davis Jr.

Rose Royce. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
From the soundtrack to Car Wash, this great slice of chant led, horn driven dance music is a brilliant bit of funkiness. Using a classic start/stop form, it is a vehicle for some great lyrics, featuring some fab bass playing & overall is just a joy.
(Of course, you can also check out the disco-funk theme song, also by Rolls Royce that's been a dancefloor fave for years!)

Latimore. Qualified Man
This little gem from Latimore is driven by a fabulous rhythmic pulse, and some great funky keyboard work. Once again this is a crossover form Soutrhern soul, which is what Latimore usually recorded. What makes this so good is the wonderfully sparse production on the linking sections where the rhythm just does it s work. Always get's people swaying on funk nights!

Isley Brothers. It's Your Thing
This early Isley Bros. slice of funk is a great precursor to their later (more sophisticated) sound. A brilliant start/stop, piano & horn punctuated rhythm underpins the raspy vocals, offering a wonderfully concise bit of funkiness. They made plenty more funk records in the following years, but somehow never quite equalled this fabulously strident track. It was their thing!
