Here's today's #freecadfriday project. I've always had a semi-intelligent desktop thermometer. It originally replaced one of those LCD indoors/outdoors thermometer after I installed smart sensors in the house. It has evolved from a 8-digit Nano Arduino driven basic thing into this generation's ESP32 driven OLED display.

I wanted to create an enclosure that had the feel of a CRT TV. I started by modeling the display according its technical drawings and a mockup of EPS32 dev board. I placed them hanging in the air, then drew rest of the case around them. Here's the outcome.

The thing itself is as much thermometer as your cellphone is just a phone. When stuff isn't happening, it shows couple temperature sensor readings and weather, but it shows noteworthy stuff from ringing door bell to raising packet loss and other stuff.

Also, how do I display measurements to 3 decimal points in a #FreeCAD page template? This hole should be 0,875 in (7/8 of an inch), but you can see that it displays as 0.88. This is correct in the sketch, but I need to print this and give it to someone with the correct measurements.

Edit: Question has been answered. Thank you!

FreeCAD Running on New Arduino UNO Q at #SFK25

The author of this post has been out representing FreeCAD and other open source projects at the fantastic SFK25 Conference. Arranged by the dedicated Free Libre Open Source Software Kosova (FLOSSK) team this has been a vibrant international conference with a great array of talks and workshops.

Since I don't know yet if I can get Fusion 360 to run on Linux, I checked if I could import my models to FreeCAD and the answer seems to be: No, only as meshes, sketches and parameters will be lost.
Before I realized that, I looked up navigation. FreeCAD offers 12 navigation modes and well... that's 11 navigation modes I never used, or 12, if we consider that I re-configured Blender to behave more similar to Unity. Gamedev and CAD don't mix well. I like the orbit mode though.

I took the initial #Sowee design by @PaulaMaddox and recreated it in #Freecad. Getting it right was hard work, as it’s resizeable (mostly), but I think it came out quite well

In case it’s not obvious, it’s a 3 player version of Sorry, but could be extended for as many players as you could practically fit around the table.

what the heck has happened to Sunday? It's mostly gone. 😭

It's not quite as pretty as the original but I grabbed the step file from a recent Adafruit project and turned it into a parametric model in part design. You can choose the width & height of the opening for the display, as well as (not shown) the hole pattern for the internal LCD panel mount.

(it'd be way more work to change the overall size of the piece, in no small part due to how all the other pieces would have to change as well. but I wish it was possible to fit a 7" display in, at least for wide screens)

I also put some laundry on 🎉 but need to hang it.

I earlier posted a video of the Robocop modified with the game ending hidden switch mod. I got asked about that a lot, so here's the first public variant of the mod.

It consists of a 3D printable frame that goes where a coin rejector used to be. It has a switch that reaches into the coin return slot. Lifting the coin return slot's flap triggers the switch, which again is wired parallel to slam tilt. Bye-bye, abandoned 4 player game with 2 balls played.

On the more technical side, this fits the standard mechanical or electronic rejector coin doors. The extra huge ones (like the ancient Mars rejectors) aren't supported.

The design principles were simplicity, ease of build and install and cheapest possible construction for mass builds. After the prints, this thing can be built in minutes. The frame was designed with #FreeCAD

@fabi1cazenave @kicad @FreeCAD @OpenSCAD I’ve used #OpenSCAD on and off over most of the last ten years and I get on with it. Most of my printing is for parts that are not visible so its function over form. It does what it does well, but it is a little clunky and has improved little over the years sadly. I don’t have the right programming skills, or time to contribute, unfortunately.

I’ve actually just installed #FreeCAD but need to find a few hours to understand the UI and the principles of hire to drive it to produce some samples to print.

Ironically the barrier to entry feels higher than for #KiCad, I was able to design and get manufactured a simple PCB with just a few hours of application.

I think I'm getting somewhere with #FreeCAD now, but it's a very steep learning curve, and it feels like it's taken far longer than it should have. Part of that is that I've used Autocad and Revit at work for a long time, and they work very differently.
