Anna-Lena Marx<p>Did you know I studied electrical engineering besides work? On Thursday, I finished my bachelor's thesis with the final presentation and it's time to finally present my project: ZEReader, a microcontroller-based E-Reader.<br>Inspired by the Open Book Project by Joey Castillo, I designed my own platform from scratch. My focus was on building a reader usable in everyday life that is capable of handling books in the EPUB format. The project is still in a very early phase, but it shows great potential, and I have lots of ideas for future revisions.</p><p>You can follow the project's journey and see its current state at <a href="https://marx.engineer/zereader/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">marx.engineer/zereader/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> and the linked GitHub repos!</p><p>And of course, a special thank you to <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://aisler.social/@aislerhq" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>aislerhq</span></a></span> for producing and sponsoring the PCBs!</p><p><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/opensource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opensource</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/hardware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hardware</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/ereader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ereader</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/zephyr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>zephyr</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/kicad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kicad</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/makers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>makers</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/electricalengineering" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electricalengineering</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a></p>

But it does support QualComm QC 2 and 3 on the USB A port, providing up to 20V 2A there.<br>On the USB-C, it also supports USB PD 3.0 and PPS from 3.3-16V, 2-3A.</p><p>I tested one non-destructively for insulation resistance at 500V and as well as sustained USB output, and it passed just fine. But taking things a step further, here’s what’s inside.</p><p>One decent quality 2-layer FR4 PCB with solder mask and full silkscreen! It’s marked “BK-384B 33W / Rev 1.0 / 2024.01.18”</p><p>(Cont. 1/2)<br><a href="https://cathode.church/tags/Electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Electronics</span></a></p>
s0 Traingirl Era<p>(Cont. 2/2)<br><em>REVISED 2025-08-03</em></p><p>✅ Pins are sheathed per AS/NZS 3112, and dimensioned correctly (not to the thinner Chinese standard). They are relatively sturdy and don’t come free with vigorous wiggling.</p><p>⚠️ However, the charger shape does not meet the standard, being too wide to fit in the circular protection recess on cord/captive outlets, which also makes them too wide to fit side-by-side in standard powerboard spacing. This is a common misunderstanding by overseas designers.</p><p>✅ Wires from pins to board are real copper with silicone insulation, with no more exposed copper than necessary.</p><p>✅ The PCB is held firmly in position between front and back of the case and in moulded slots. The case is 2.5mm thick and securely glued shut. There’s also foam protecting the top of the transformer and caps from colliding with the top of the case. </p><p>⚠️ No heat-sinking or heat transfer from components/PCB to the case.</p><p>✅ A fuse on the active side, in thick heat shrink to prevent damage.</p><p>✅ 2.4mm clearance between L and N traces on the mains side.</p><p>✅ 2.8mm clearance across isolation barrier between mains and ELV traces at narrowest part (under mask), and 3.6mm between exposed conductive parts. This is pretty good.</p><p>✅ Mains side caps are bled down to &lt;1V within a few minutes of losing power under no load. No voltage across mains pins when unplugged.</p><p>✅ YuChang (YJH) and ShiCaXon electrolytic caps, seem fine. The DC side cap might be Aly-Poly, even better.</p><p>✅ Appropriately sized transformer, looks of decent quality.</p><p>✅ PD 3.0 &amp; PPS Support.</p><p>⚠️ High earth leakage current of 180µA under no load, and over 1mA under load. This is what makes a charging cable or device plugged in feel "tingly".</p><p>All told, I’d call this a pretty well made budget power supply, and endorse it for use by friends and family! Just make sure to only use one port at a time, and you might find annoying tingling if touching the device.</p><p><a href="https://cathode.church/tags/Electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Electronics</span></a></p>

I created a <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/kicad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kicad</span></a> ready <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/3d" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>3d</span></a> model in <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/freecad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freecad</span></a> as well. Jason Weatherly<p>Hrmm, I forgot you can just print these kinds of things out. Will help when assembling the new NES power/AV board.</p><p><a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://social.linux.pizza/tags/3dprinting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>3dprinting</span></a></p>
winduptoy<p>Alright electrical engineers, I need your help. </p><p>This electromagnetic PTO clutch burned up and I've repaired it by tediously pulling the windings out of their epoxy, fixing up the loose ends, and repacking it in fresh epoxy. The specs for this particular clutch say that it should have between 3 and 10 ohms of resistance. However, my freshly repaired one is measuring 2.4 ohms.</p><p>I don't want to burn anything up by drawing too much current when I reinstall this thing. How can I easily add between 1 and 5 ohms to this circuit? It's supposed to be 12V, but I'm measuring 13.8V to 14V when the machine is runnning, so I believe the resistor I need to add should be rated for at least 65 watts.</p><p>Is there an easier way to add just a little resistance than purchasing a big fat resistor online? I'd much rather have a MacGyver fix here.</p><p><a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/askfedi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>askfedi</span></a> <a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a></p>

concretedog<p>Following last weeks <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FreeCADFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FreeCADFriday</span></a> where I made and <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/3Dprinted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>3Dprinted</span></a> the spring loaded magnet base work clamps, I've today prototyped a micro probe idea. Again magnet mount, the next iteration will have one more degree of freedom in the arm. The probe is a stainless 0.4mm accupuncture needle insulated with some 0.6mm heatshrink! The board of course is an old <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/KiCad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KiCad</span></a> project. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/freecad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freecad</span></a></p>
