Didn't watch the talk till the end yet, but yeah I started also 20 years ago with uploading my first #website to my university's server and in order build static websites back then you had to use something like #dreamweaver

Didn't like it, so I switched to dynamic sites using #cgi and #perl 😅

So yes the tooling wasn't there yet, #PHP was not yet installed in all servers

#rsync and #ssh access wasn't also available most of the time, so #ftp was the only way
