C17 Sgraffito dish made in Barnstaple Devon

Potters of Barnstaple were highly skilled in the making of pottery, which was traded across Britain and to the new American colonies. The figure on the dish may be King Charles II hiding in an oak tree.

Sgraffito is a technique used on pottery by applying two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze to an unfired ceramic body. To create the design, the top layer is scratched through to reveal parts of the underlying colour.
