Le parcours gagnant débute en août 2024 avec un gain de 500 000 $, suivi d’un million supplémentaire en novembre de la même année. Le 3 mai 2025, David valide à nouveau un ticket gagnant… pour un autre million. Une quatrième victoire, plus ancienne, avait déjà récompensé sa fidélité au jeu il y a plusieurs années, pour environ 250 000 $. À ce jour, l’homme affiche près de 3 millions $ de gains cumulés. Selon la Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC), les chances de remporter ne serait-ce qu’un seul de ces jackpots sont de 1 sur 33,3 millions. « J’achète des tickets depuis 1982, mais je ne m’attendais jamais à ça. C’est presque irréel », a-t-il confié à la presse locale, sourire aux lèvres. Pour David, le geste de gratter ou valider un billet de loterie est avant tout un petit rituel du quotidien, porteur d’espoir. Après avoir survécu à un cancer, il confesse que cette routine lui donne "une raison de rêver un peu chaque jour". Et cette chance, il la partage : avec ses premiers gains, il a emmené sa femme à Hawaï. Le prochain projet ? Un voyage à Terre-Neuve, en hommage à leurs origines. Bien que les statistiques soient stratosphériques, les représentants de la WCLC rappellent que chaque tirage est indépendant. Il est donc mathématiquement possible, même si ultra improbable, de gagner plusieurs fois — une explication rationnelle à un phénomène qui, pour beaucoup, relève du miracle. David Serkin incarne une figure rare, celle du joueur passionné, modeste, que la vie a longtemps mis à l’épreuve, avant de lui offrir un véritable jackpot d’espérance. Une belle revanche sur les probabilités, et peut-être, sur le destin.
