#BrowserEngine

"Readers may recall that Japan recently passed the Smartphone Act, officially the Bill on the Promotion of Competition for Specified Software Used in Smartphones. Among its most important reforms is a direct prohibition on Apple’s long-standing ban on third-party browser engines on iOS.

This ban has functioned as an effective ban on browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave & Vivaldi, by forcing them to use Apple’s WebKit engine, which they cannot modify or control. This results in no effective browser competition on iOS, and web apps being deprived of the APIs and performance they need to compete with native apps."

"#JamieZawinski has #repeatedly said:

Now hear me out, but What If…? #browser #development was in the hands of some kind of #nonprofit #organization?

In my #humble but #correct #opinion, #Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:

#Building THE #reference #implementation #WebBrowser and
Being a jugular-#snapping #attack #dog on #standards #committees.
There is no 3."
"Perhaps this is the only #viable #resolution."

"#Mozilla, for all its many #failings, has #invented a lot of #amazing #tech, from #Rust to #Servo to the #leading #budget #phone #OS. It shouldn't be trying to #capitalize on this #stuff. Maybe 3encourage it to have semi-independent #spinoffs, such as #Thunderbird, and as #KaiOS ought to be, and as #Rust could have been."
"But #JamieZawinski has the only #clear #vision and #solution we've seen yet. Perhaps he's #right, and #Mozilla #should be a #nonprofit, #working to #fund the one #independent, non-#vendor-driven, #standardscompliant #browserEngine."

I am renaming my web browser engine to Phenyl. The current name MoeNavigatorEngine suggests that is is tied to or dependent on the MoeNavigator browser, but instead it is an independent software library.

Phenyl is the name of a ring of carbon and hydrogen atoms in organic chemistry. Phenyl rings are parts of different organic molecules. A browser engine can be seen as a part of many different programs that interact with servers.

This renaming is also a good opportunity to put all classes in the same namespace and remove old files that aren't necessary anymore.

The browser engine and its documentation is available on Codeberg: codeberg.org/moenavigator/moen

The renaming is done in the "rename-phenyl" branch.

Codeberg.orgmoenavigatorengineMoeNavigatorEngine is a web browser engine written from scratch in C++. The goal of this project is to create a modular, fast and flexible web browser engine.
