My Favorite #Settlers #Games

Settlers II was my first #Settlers #game and it still holds a special place in my heart. After that, I played III and IV, both fantastic entries in the series. Unfortunately, I never got around to playing the original Settlers, which I really need to catch up on someday. As for IV, I have to admit I didn’t spend as much time with it as it probably deserves.

V didn’t feel like a real Settlers game at all. VI was okay, nothing special, but closer to the roots again. VII was very different, almost like a #boardgame, but I really liked it.

VIII, the so-called #reboot, was a letdown. It began with #VolkerWertich, the original creator, but #Ubisoft had other plans. He left the project, and without him, it lost its soul.

Living Forest is a pretty nice #boardgame , but it has two flaws.

The first is that the setup is amongst the longest in our collection. That makes it difficult for kids.

The second is that out of the three ways to win, one is nearly always the easiest, and the other is always the hardest.

The first issue is one can work around.

The second means the game's relative complexity isn't matched by a richness of available tactics, and it feels unbalanced. That makes me sad.

I still like it.

This is such a fun cooperative #boardgame to play with the little ones! It feels like a mix of “Where's Waldo?” and “Carmen Sandiego.” You explore a big, highly detailed map together and use clues to track down some quirky "crimes" (more like silly mischief). I had a blast with the kiddos! We will definitely come back to it soon.

Thanks to my dear friend @jerk Rachel and I got Portals played tonight. Fantastic little game. 2P only, played in 30 minutes on the dot. Feels like the classic trilogy of tile placers but a fantasy twist with the additional path to collect tokens through spells. The tile selection mechanism is pretty solid. I wish the spells had special powers or abilities associated to them, but overall, a great little game.

Thanks my friend!

The history of chess is fascinating, with its roots as a game being linked mainly to India, but claims that China and Persia, or even earlier civilisations in West Asia may be the source.

Over 500 years ago the chess pieces moved differently to how we know them today, and variations on how to play the game weren't standardised internationally until the last century.
