MPs have voted to stop doctors suggesting assisted dying to under-18s — a welcome safeguard.

But many of the bill's original protections have already been removed, raising fears of coercion, rushed decisions and abuse.
Vox Political supports assisted dying with proper safeguards.

This bill no longer guarantees them.

Vox Political · Assisted Dying Bill: Under-18 Safeguard Passed, But Risks RemainMPs back a safeguard to protect under-18s, but critics say the Assisted Dying Bill still opens the door to coercion and abuse

Important warnings by the Royal College of Psychiatrists on the UK Assisted Dying Blll, currently in the formative stages in parliament.

If you are a UK citizen, write to your MP and make them aware of the issues.

Quotes:

UMMET NEEDS: "There should be a requirement for a holistic assessment of unmet need: Treatable needs such as intolerable pain, financial hardship and inadequate care or housing can make a person want to die. Yet the Bill makes no provision to assess unmet needs at any stage, nor consult others involved in the person’s care or life."

LACK OF QUALIFIED STAFF: "There are not enough consultant psychiatrists to do what the Bill asks: As things currently stand, mental health services simply do not have the resource required to meet a new range of demands."

www.rcpsych.ac.ukThe RCPsych cannot support the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for England and Wales in its current formThe College is calling on MPs to consider serious concerns about the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for England and Wales, ahead of the pivotal Commons Report stage debate and Third Reading.

The UK's assisted dying bill may be well-intentioned, but the way it is being developed in the final parliamentary stages is worrying.

There are good arguments for giving a person a free choice on ending their life.

In practice, there will be people who are suffering because of lack of care and who want to escape their suffering. They should be offered proper care in life, not an exit from life.

And there will be many who will come under pressure from their family or doctors to just go. Those cases will be impossible to identify.

People with disabilities will be particularly exposed to these risks.

They may ask to die, simply because they are unsupported in life.

The drafting of the new bill ignores all these concerns.

If you are a UK citizen, write to your MP and explain your concens.

An important piece by #LucyWebster on how disability issues are ignored in the draft UK #AssistedDyingBill.

Arguments you will hear MPs make against voting for the assisted dying bill tomorrow:

1. It's a slippery slope

That's a logical fallacy. They're not voting on what may or may not happen 10 years from now, they're voting on the current bill. If someone tries to amend it later, they'll get another vote.

The Assisted Dying Bill – prayers

Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers. Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
Genesis 48.21-22
